The Culture, Arts & Innovation Department: Innovation, Technology & Design Lab (‘ITD’)/Centre for Brain Fitness (‘CBF’)
is currently seeking a full-time temporary
RESEARCH ASSISTANT
LEVEL 2
Non-Union – 70 hours bi-weekly – 1.00 F.T.E.
Reporting to Laurent Moreno

About the Department
The goals of the Research Division are: (1) To understand the underlying brain mechanisms involved in cognition and emotion; (2) To understand how these mechanisms are affected by disease or injury; (3) To identify which parts of the brain can be taught to compensate for damage in other areas; and, (4) To develop and validate rehabilitation strategies to improve functionality and quality of life.

To achieve these goals, the Research Division will continue to emphasize basic science to advance knowledge about the human mind and brain, utilizing a combination of neuroimaging techniques and behavioural studies and, the application of this basic knowledge to direct issues of clinical importance specifically in the areas of Alzheimer's disease, Stroke and Cognition and Neurorehabilitation. Within the Division, the Centre for Brain Fitness and the Innovation, Technology & Design Lab are two components of Baycrest’s Innovation Engine. These two entities work with scientists and clinicians to support the exploration, design, and evaluation of innovative ideas and processes that can have system wide impact and/or be commercialized in the health care and health promotion field.

Responsibilities include:
• Supporting assigned research projects in ITD/CBF.
• Screening, recruiting and gathering informed consent from study participants.
• Conducting interviews and administering assessments.
• Collecting, inputting and assisting with analyzing qualitative data.
• Conducting quantitative assessments using standardized assessment tools and inputting quantitative data.
• Assisting with statistical analysis of data.
• Assisting in the draft of research proposals for submission to the ethics board.
• Conducting literature searches, as required.
• Assisting in the preparation of trend reports, and researching product markets.
• Coordinating study schedules and maintaining records.
• Maintaining and organizing data files and reprinting library.
• Assisting in the preparation of grant submissions.
• Engaging in knowledge transfer and sharing of best practices.
• Collaborating with team members to design and deploy research processes and quality improvement initiatives that support best practices and process improvement.

Qualifications include:
• Four (4) year Honours Bachelor’s degree and 5 years’ experience as a Research
Assistant at Level 1 or three (3) year general Bachelor of Science degree with
experience in a specialized area and five (5) years’ experience as a Research Assistant at Level 1 or Master’s degree, or a general degree in a related field, with a minimum of two (2) years’ experience.
• Previous experience with research subject recruitment, data gathering, report
preparation.
• Previous experience working with, and testing, older adults, including those with mild cognitive impairment an asset.
• Other experience/interests in design, engineering, technology, the arts an asset.
• Previous experience in a non-profit organization, particularly a complex health care
facility (Hospital and/or Long-Term Care facility) is an asset.
• Equivalent combinations of education & experience will be considered.

• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively and actively seek supervision
as needed.
