The Nurse Practitioner (NP), Medical Oncology program is a self-directed Advanced Practice Nurse prepared at the graduate and post-graduate level, who functions in an expanded nursing role in a collaborative practice model. The NP demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge base in oncologic nursing practice and exhibits a high degree of clinical competence in caring for adults who are living with cancer.
The NP scope of practice incorporates the skills and knowledge from the disciplines of nursing and medicine. Working in collaboration with a physician or a group of physicians, the NP provides timely care management for specific patient populations, including admission, ongoing assessment, symptom management, ordering/performing specified diagnostic tests and procedures. Also orders/performs special treatment (medication therapies, clinical treatments, consultation, etc. under the direction of a specific physician or group of physicians within scope of practice following appropriate legislation. The NP provides comprehensive patient care using advanced assessment skills and a sound knowledge of clinical therapeutics and provides indirect patient care services to support patient care, promote professional education, and advanced knowledge through research and scholarly activities.
Qualifications
· Successful completion of recognized Masters of Nursing program
· Acute Care NP Certificate and registration with College of Nurses of Ontario
· College of Nurses of Ontario: Registered Nurses Certificate of Competence
· Minimum of three years experience with oncology patients
· Canadian Nurses Association: Certification for Specialty Membership in professional nursing specialty organizations: e.g., Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO)
· Recent experience collaborating with external agencies and community partners preferred
· Proficiency with computer programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet Power Chart and GroupWise
· Thorough understanding of Family-Centered Care Principles and ability to use in practice
· Demonstrated commitment to the development of professional practice, professional development, life long learning, evidence based practice and excellence in patient care
· Excellent and effective ability in both written and oral communication skills
· Highly developed critical thinking skills and ability to conceptualize and analyze problems
· Recognition, understanding and demonstrated Emotional Intelligence (EI), particularly emotional self awareness, assertiveness, optimism, stress tolerance and empathy, in a variety of situations
· Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills
· Demonstrated ability to work and communicate collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment
· Demonstrated ability to prioritize fluctuating workload demands
· Demonstrated ability to relate easily to a variety of people from various backgrounds
· Demonstrated understanding and ability to manage the complexities of change and transition
