The Opportunity

The Ontario Power Authority (OPA) is an agency of the provincial government with a unique and vital role in Ontario’s electricity sector. It has the mandate to ensure that Ontario’s business, industry and residential consumers have the electricity they need- when they need it. The OPA is responsible for ensuring that the province’s electricity system remains reliable, sustainable and cost effective. Our key areas of focus are coordinating conservation efforts across the province, planning the power system for the long term and ensuring the development of needed generation resources.

The Senior Writer/Editor is accountable to the Manager, Editorial Services to develop and manage an outstanding caliber of writing, editing and publications counsel and production service.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Writes and advises on executive speeches; assists with coordinating executive speech program
·         Plans, researches, writes, edits OPA material, including briefs and official reports
·         Maintains OPA’s key message centre
·         Acts as a clearing house for information; ensures business units are aware of and have access to research findings
·         Other communications duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

·         Outstanding writer/editor; demonstrated by over 10+ years experience
·         10+ years experience in communications and/or news media  
·         Demonstrated experience/success in writing speeches for senior executives
·         Solid knowledge of the energy business
·         Project management skills
·         Analytical thinking and editorial skills  (re publications/presentations)
·         Skilled writing ability for diverse audiences
·         Well organized; ability to multi-task and meet deadlines with continually changing timelines & priorities
·         Strong customer service orientation
·         Team leadership potential and good manager of creative people
·         Team player with personal drive and perseverance
·         Solid organizational awareness
·         Intermediate to advanced computer skills (i.e. MS Office suite, graphics packages and other web/database protocol and systems)
