The Opportunity:
This is an exciting opportunity for Chemical Technologist to join the Environmental Technologies Group at the Applied Research and Innovation Services (ARIS) Department, SAIT. The main responsibilities will be providing assistance in the area of Clean Technologies associated with produced water treatment and Biodiesel projects. These projects may include experiments associated with prototype functional testing, Bench and pilot scale operation and various chemical testing and instrumentation using standard methods, ASTM methods or equivalent. Reporting to the Laboratory Coordinator and the Project Lead the candidate will be a key team member working towards the successful set up and implementation of applied research and technology development projects while demonstrating a good understanding of applicable chemical and environmental, health and safety regulations.

Responsibilities of this position will include, but not be limited to the following:

Biodiesel Group: Perform routine biodiesel tests to strict quality standards. These include but are not limited to flash point, viscosity, distillation, sulfated ash, density, acid number, Karl Fischer, etc.

Energy and Environment (Water) Group
1) Testing of samples with and without coagulants using various types of membranes such as ceramic membranes, novel PTFE membranes, MF, UF, NF and RO/ED membranes.
2) Assisting the operation and testing of bench or pilot prototypes on new processes or clean technologies in the area of water treatment
3) Sampling and Analytical/chemical instrumentation for testing toxicity, NA, carboxylic acids, BOD, COD, pH , TSS, oil and grease and dissolved metals (SAIT energy lab and External lab third party validation)
4) Preparing and submitting laboratory reports
5) Clean up/Safety and disposal

Candidate Profile:
As the ideal candidate, you must have an education background of Chemical Technology Program. Some exposure to SAGD water treatment is preferable but not necessary. Additionally, your capabilities will include: an understanding and working knowledge of good laboratory practices (GLP), chemical instrumentation in order to operate ICP, FTIR or IC, chemical laboratory safety and associated regulatory requirements.  A solid work ethic, honesty, professionalism and a willingness to adapt and meet deadlines within a changing environment is required as interactions will involve industry clients from various industrial sectors. Strong inter-personnel and communications skills are a must along with the ability to work independently or in a team setting.

Requirements
:
  • Standard First Aid, CPR level A, WHMIS and H2S Alive (Training will be provided for candidates)
  • Must be proficient in standard computer software MS office
